More New Features - iOS 14.5 Beta 3

Hi everyone,

ios 14.5  beta 3 has been out for a couple of days and apple starting to really nail down the feature  set that’s within the updates and then making sure  they’re stable before they release them  I think  14.5 is a much better update than 14.4 with more  features and fixes as well as well as security and  privacy and so I’m really looking forward to that  and I think it’ll be a great advantage to many  people once we have our phones even more secure  but there’s even more features that I didn’t  mention in the first video and the first thing  has to do with a feature that’s now available  to everyone not just for 14.5 beta 3 but rather  everyone that has an iphone and apple has made a  new website available or really added a feature  to a website that’s already available and you can  see privacy.apple.com once you log in you have a  few different options and one of the options is to  transfer a copy of your data so if we tap on this.

It says request to transfer a copy of your data  well wait just a moment for it to load and you’ll  see it says transfer a copy of your photos and  videos so you can transfer them from icloud to say  Google photos so right now Google photos is the  only destination available but maybe well have  amazon photos in the future or additional services  but as you can see what it says in the top it says  copy your photos and videos from icloud photos  to another participating service this will take  between three and seven days we use this time  to verify that the request was made by you  and to finish the transfer and you’ll see it tells  you how many there are so I have two thousand or  twenty five thousand nine hundred and seventy  eight photos and one thousand three hundred and  thirty nine videos using about 742 gigabytes  I need to change that as many of these videos  just need to be thrown away but hopefully in the  future well have some other features or other Services.

That we can transfer this to so that’s  something that’s new that’s available now if you  want to transfer those to another service maybe  you’re switching to android or maybe you just  don’t want them in icloud photos you can do that  hopefully we’ll have a way to export them as well  just dump them onto a computer that would be  nice also now the next change has to do with  apple watch if you take your watch off of your  wrist and put it back on and you have a passcode  enabled it will prompt you to put in that passcode  if you have the option turned on to unlock it with  your phone just by unlocking your iphone you can  unlock the watch on your wrist because its nearby  when you do that it tells you that with a little  drop down they’ve changed the icon in the drop  down so this icon is changed  I just took  a screenshot of it since it doesn’t stay on the  screen for long but you can see the little watch  icon has been updated so that’s new not a huge  change but something worth noting also a developer  found some new icon packs for developers so.

More New Features - iOS 14.5 Beta 3

Jeff Hackworth here on twitter found that there’s  new symbols or sf that’s san Francisco their font  there’s new symbols for things such as air pods  well zoom in here but there’s new symbols for  air pods and things like that and home pod as well  so you can see those here if I scroll over you’ll  see there’s some new symbols as well these are  just for use within applications if you want to  use those with homepod mini  and homepod  itself so that’s a slight change its available  to developers not something you can physically see  but it’s there now a feature they’ve brought back  has to do with setting your music as a default  to say spottily for example so maybe you want to  use spottily instead of apple music well we thought  this was a default music setting change but apple  has clarified this so you can ask siri to play a  song and say spottily it’ll say who do you or you  can play a song and it’ll say who do you want  to play this song through meaning apple music  or spottily.

And it will change and then continue  to play through that however there’s no setting  for it apple has said that this is just basically  intelligence based so that siri can learn what you  like to listen to over time it’s not actually a  default setting I wish they bring that setting  into music here it would be great to see them put  a setting within the music app just to change that  and then allow us to select what we want  for default whether that be Google music or  I guess YouTube music at this point as well as  apple music spottily title anything else one of  those would be nice to be able to switch to if  that’s what your preference is now someone had  sent in that they’ve made some album change or  album artwork changes when you’re in different  music for example so if we search for someone here  you can see there are different album animations.

But this is different based on the artist for  example so here we have two popular artists and  it’s not on every artist so I just picked this  but you’ll see the one on the left is moving  the one on the right is moving now and it’s  just a little bit different between the artist  this is mostly just because that’s what the  artist chose so it’s not really too big of a  change but I wanted to point that out since album  covers could vary how its zooming in the album  it may be outlined a little bit differently but  you’ll see its moving back out now so they’ve  made some nice animations it’s not on every album  maybe in the future it will be now within the find  my app a week or so ago when I talked about beta  2 there was some mention in the code that the  phone could notify you if you’re using that new  feature where you can track items within find my  to let you know that your item is being tracked,

Maybe you have someone else’s item by accident  or you have an air tag or some other tag that’s  being tracked whether this uses that or not is  hard to say but whether or not you have that it  will let you know that its being tracked and  relaying back to the owner that you’re using  that now it doesn’t tell you who it is there  isn’t an identifier but someone was able to find  that there’s a little pop-up that will show this  and if we go over to photos here here’s a little  screenshot and you can see it says turn off item  safety feature the owner of an unknown item  will be able to see your location and you will  no longer receive notifications when an unknown  item is found moving with you so this is good  and bad in the sense that the data is anonymous  but say someone takes one of your possessions  that has one of these tags in it they may be  able to turn off that notification it’s unclear  if apple is just turning off the notification or  disabling maybe location services for this as well  through your device since it relays that  information.

More New Features - iOS 14.5 Beta 3

It’ll be interesting to see if there’s  more options for this in the future now within  settings quite a few people have been messaging  me about a new setting that showed up for them  so let’s go into settings and if we scroll down  keep scrolling you’ll see TV provider now this has  been here for a while in certain countries like  the united states however it seems to be rolling  out to other countries according to a lot of you  and so what this does is allow you to use your TV  provider so maybe you subscribe to a television  provider locally whether that’s combined with  internet like it is in the united states usually  what it lets you do is easily sign into  applications such as local news stations  that would let you stream TV for free so by using  that sign on you’d be able to do that maybe free  apps as well so as you can see here it says at  t u-verse has been saved as your TV provider  because at t u-verse is not participating in  single sign-on.

You will need to sign in to other  supported apps individually all this does is allow  you to sign in seamlessly between your provider  if it supports it so maybe you have in the united  states maybe you have Comcast or affinity or one  of those services you log into it log into say  your favorite news station or maybe even hbo go  or something like that you may be able to get free  services if you sign in with your TV provider so  this has been fairly common in the united states  but it seems to be rolling out elsewhere now in  addition to the things I’ve already mentioned  there’s additional mentions within the code to  things like siri for example there’s new siri car  commands that could be implemented in the future  maybe when you’re using apple car play to help  better use features or give you more features for  example also siri may be able to modify contacts  in the future which could be kind of interesting  assuming that it works properly and doesn’t mess  up your contacts hopefully it would confirm that.

Information to you I would imagine and then also  siri may be able to tell you about traffic when  you’re in your car so maybe you’re leaving for  work and you want to know how the traffic is it  would better understand that and give you that  information based off maybe a commute you’ve  set or maybe some navigation point you’ve  added in maps so it would be able to do that  also there’s talk of apple working on siri to  help it better understand people with disabilities

or that need accessibility or have issues  with speech for example so maybe you have an  issue with stuttering it would be able to better  understand you with that so there’s definitely  some work going into siri with speech recognition  and it’s great to see them working on this now  there’s also one final thing I wanted to mention  that’s in the code that I thought was interesting  is that there’s sensor kit ui facial metrics and  speech metrics that seem to be related to future  health studies now we’ve had health studies  for a while that use maybe the apple watch to  measure your heart and give that information  back to universities should you opt in to do.

More New Features - iOS 14.5 Beta 3

That and its completely opt-in so if you want  to do it you can if you don’t you dent have to  but there’s future feature releases that seem  to be related to the iPhones ability to detect  facial expressions and listen for different sounds  that are emotion related such as laughing shouting  or maybe something else so it could use that  information from the microphone and the camera  to better help health studies understand human  expression and maybe different metrics they’re  trying to measure so again it’s nice to see them  add features but again its opt-in and you don’t  have to do that now with the ipad like I said  before it had terrible battery life for me  and that’s still continuing with beta 3. so you’ll  see that it was last charged to 100 percent at 205  a.m. this morning and were down to 57 and I’ve  hardly used it so I’ve used it about an hour  or so maybe three hours at most and its  draining the battery very rapidly and so this  seems to be a problem for me continually on the  ipad and I think at this point I’m just going  to wait for ios 14.5 and ipad os 14.5 to release  to the public and I’ll probably just completely.

Restore it and start over and see if that fixes it  since apple generally says if you continue to have  problems to do that and it should fix it so I’ll  try that then and as far as a follow-up as far as  bugs and other things that may not be working and  other things that are working well I’ll be doing  a follow-up in a couple days and I have a YouTube  community poll available and at this time it got  three and a half thousand votes or so 3.5 k votes  and if you want to vote and comment that’s always  helpful so we can get accurate data about the  overall experience so I’ll be having a follow-up  in a couple days about that so be sure to go there  if you are interested in participating if you’d  like to get your hands on this wallpaper.

The AdLib Gold Experience

Greetings folks, and today on LGR I am proud to present the fabled AdLib Gold 1000 Stereo Sound Adapter. An IBM PC-compatible sound card which, after multiple delays, launched at a suggested price of $299 in the US sometime in late 1992. More or less, its release is a bit complicated but we’ll get to that. For now lemme just go ahead and say how much I’m freak in’ out with excitement recording this footage. Cuz dude, seeing an AdLib Gold in person, still in the box, unused? Among retro PC enthusiasts, that’s like finding a golden unicorn that craps diamonds, it’s just not a thing. Yet here it is, looking’ spiffy! And it’s all thanks to Trixter, aka Jim Leonard of The Old-school PC, Check out his YouTube channel if you’re into this kind of thing too, the man’s a fountain of knowledge and some of the items in his collection are literally one of a kind. Not the least of which being this pristine AdLib Gold 1000, a card that I’ve been wondering about ever since I was eight years old lookin...

Apple Keyboard Evolution 1983-2015

I don’t have a Lisa Keyboard, and they’re quite rare and expensive. But here’s what it looked like, it was quite large and clunky. Although not really any wider than a modern Apple keyboard . So, this is the original Macintosh keyboard. It’s kind of tall, and notice that it has no arrow keys, no function keys and no number pad. Apparently, Steve Jobs believed that everybody would use the mouse for everything, except typing. It uses an RJ-11 type connector, similar to a phone cord. The mouse actually had its own separate connector, and did not connect to the keyboard at all. This is about as basic as it gets. I can plug my telephone into it, for some reason. So, one thing I noticed about this is that there are no indicators on where to put your fingers. I’ve never heard a keyboard echo before. It’s not real springy or anything. It does have… …metallic kind of noise to it. But, DAVID: This is the Apple Desktop Bus keyboard. As the name suggests, this was the first keyboard to use the new...

IBM 8516 Touchscreen CRT Monitor

Greetings and welcome to LGR Oddware where were taking a look at hardware and software that is odd, forgotten, and obsolete! And today it is the IBM 8516 CRT touchscreen from the beginning of the 1990s. And yeah you can touch and draw and do all kinds of things that you would normally do with a mouse or light pen or whatever else -- just with your fingers! And so let’s see what this thing is and what it can do. All right so this is the IBM PS/2 Model 8516 13-inch CRT touchscreen monitor first introduced in June of 1991 for a suggested retail price of $1695 US dollars, holy crap. That would be almost $3,100 at the time of this recording, not a cheap price for a 13-inch VGA monitor back then.  It was built by IBM to be compatible with PCs running DOS, Windows 3 -- and IBM OS/2 of course, because they were still pushing it rather hard when this came out. And as advanced and awesome as it was for its time it was not the first of its kind as far as touchscreen CRTs, not by a long shot....

The best gaming laptop for MS-DOS games

The other day, I used to be reading this old Computes Gazette magazine from 1983. and that I saw this card you'll send off for more information. happen if I filled it out and sent it off? Well, stick around till the top and I'll show you the result. Most of the time, stepping into Retro Gaming are often quite challenge. Even the old Atari 2600 her, for instance, it are often very challenging to seek out a contemporary TV or monitor that you simply. On the brilliant side, the games are pretty easy to affect. All you've got to try to to is locate them online, or thrift shop, or whatever and you purchase the sport, and you recognize, But, things get even harder once you start watching old computers. For instance, the Commodore 64 uses a disk format that's essentially foreign today.  It's no means to attach to the web, and albeit you've got a pile of blank disks, getting the games copied over to them from the web could be a nightmare. Now, if you fast forward just a...

Strangest Computer Designs of the '80s

OMG Mr. LGR!!! You made my day showing the Seiko computer watch series. I collect these things and Have almost  the entire lineup up including the weird UC-2200. The only one I'm missing is the "wrist mac" which was essentially a Seiko RC4400 but marketed and sold for Apple. It could be considered the first apple watch! That design for the Elwro-800 actually seems pretty good and I wish I had it for the C64 back in the day. That wire holder could have been used for holding a computer magazine with a user made program which they always had in the magazines back in the day. Even now it would be good for data input from a written copy, or even writers who like to get their pre-writing done on paper. They were the machines we were taught Turing language on -- and compiling even a tiny Turing program on them was unbelievably slow.  I really liked the GUI on them though, but we never really used the GUI much; all the programming we did was in a text file run through a compiler ...

The Advantech I.Q. Unlimited with BASIC and a Z80 CPU.

Hello, and welcome back to the 8-Bit Guy. In this episode, I want to show you this bizarre little computer known as the IQ Unlimited by Advantech. Now, you might be wondering “What is this company Advantech?” Well, if you turn the computer over you’ll see it was actually produced by Video Technology Electronics, otherwise known as V-Tech.” Yes, that’s the same V-Tech that has produced tons of cordless telephones, kids learning computers, baby monitors, and a variety of other things. They are also the ones that built the Laser 128, which was an Apple II clone, along with the matching Laser XT which was a PC clone. They also produced the laser line of portable computers, and even a series of proprietary desktop computers that carried the laser brand name. So, needless to say V-Tech is no stranger to making computers. But, I think this may be the strangest one they ever made. The front of the box claims it to be complete, powerful, simple, and affordable. They are also those that built th...

Words of Krom Ngoy

Words of Kram Ngoy This Brahma song is translated to tell Khmer men and women To be mindful should be diligent. Do not be lazy, do not be too stupid, try to learn numbers, learn the alphabet Learn all the virtues, supernatural wisdom combined with ideas. Born to see through, even from afar           Really good at thinking about everything. Fools do not wake up like blind people on both sides           There is no image of a cheap sinner born ignorant. The human race, though high and low, descended from the Pao clan.           Evil, good, black and white, cut off descendants like ancestors. Ignorant people are not venerated as a religion           The monks know the Dharma, the students study hard. The ignorant breed is not very wise, the crooked breed is not very gentle           Straight seed until the true seed does not disappear. Innoc...

Fast roaming OpenWrt Wi-Fi Access points

Before we start let me do a test. I have my  phone here which measures my Wi-Fi speed and  another phone which I use as a camera in  the other hand. I start on the 2nd floor  where I have an access point. As you can see speed  is quite OK. It won’t go much higher because I  capped it. I’ll explain in a second. Let me start  moving towards the staircase to the 1st floor.  As I do that you can see that the speed goes  down while I walk down the stairs until it starts  moving back up because I picked up the signal  from the 2nd access point here on the first floor.  Let me keep moving down to the basement. It’s  all concrete here so Wi-Fi gets weakened a lot.   But it doesn’t take long until I  get closer to the 3rd access point  here in the basement and speed picks up.  Walking back upstairs - same scenario.  How do I do that so seamlessly without  interruption of signal ? Is it a  Mes...

Will Kill Your Computer

Hey guys, this is Austin, and this is the USB Killer. Now, it might not look like much, however this will straight up kill your computer. So, this is a device that’s used to test hardware, so while it looks like an ordinary USB device, instead, there’s a series of capacitors inside. So, if you plug it into a computer, it will charge those capacitors up, and once they’re full it turns around and releases all of that power at 240 volts straight back into the computer, in theory killing it. It doesn’t take much to be able to pop this thing open. Now, before we proceed: Do not try this at home. Seriously. Not only is it very possible for this thing to kill electronics, but it’s also. And by being careful, I mean don’t try this at home. We have an Asus Chrome book.  Now, USB Killer claims that this is going to work on around 95 percent of computers, and the reason for that is that while some computers have properly capped USB ports, most have completely unprotected ports, which means th...
